Hello! The new CU lunchbox I want to introduce today is the Bap-banchan-ban Jeyuk-bokkeum, released in the PBICK lineup. Actually, this jeyuk-bokkeum lunchbox came out fairly early when the PBICK lineup was first renewed! Now that CU’s entire Fresh Food lineup has switched over to PBICK, I bought it partly to review the lunchbox menus I hadn’t gotten to, and partly because the jeyuk-bokkeum makeup looked pretty decent! It turned out to be a menu that was surprisingly good in both taste and portion! So let’s take a look at what it’s all about.

Bap-banchan-ban Jeyuk-bokkeum: Price and Features
This menu follows PBICK’s two-tier lunchbox “Bap-banchan-ban” (half rice, half side dishes) concept, so it has quite a lot for what’s almost a single-item menu! Since it’s such a basic jeyuk-bokkeum menu, there’s no special concept beyond “cabbage wraps and plenty of pork.” Jeyuk-bokkeum on its own already has enough selling power, after all, haha. The price of this menu is 4,900 won!

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThis menu is a two-tier lunchbox with rice on the bottom and side dishes on top. Perhaps because many people who glance at the lunchbox in-store mistakenly think there’s no rice, from this menu on, a sticker saying “rice is in the first tier” has been added. It’s not certain, but it does make you suspect as much, haha!

Since it’s a menu made up of simple rice and jeyuk-bokkeum, the volume is moderate and the calories don’t look too high! The sodium is at about the same level as other lunchboxes. For reference, the pork used in the jeyuk-bokkeum is said to be domestic pork leg!

So let’s take a quick look at the composition. This menu has a main of cabbage wraps + jeyuk-bokkeum plus two simple side dishes! It’s a menu with three sides in total (maybe four if you count the cabbage wraps separately!), but the portion itself is almost the envy of a single-item menu.

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netHere’s the jeyuk-bokkeum, the main of this menu. First off, it seems a bit thicker than the thin bulgogi-cut pork you commonly see at convenience stores! Since cabbage wraps already come alongside, it seems they didn’t add extra vegetables to bulk it up. It looks surprisingly hearty, and the sauce looks pretty spicy too!

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe cabbage wraps came as a few pieces that seem to have been simply steamed once. Since no ssamjang or dipping sauce is provided separately, I also suspect the jeyuk-bokkeum itself may have been seasoned a bit strongly.

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThere are two side dishes! A simple rolled egg and perilla-seed seasoned yeolgari cabbage. I’ve often seen the perilla-seed seasoned yeolgari cabbage in other PBICK menus too! Back then I figured it might change with the season, but it seems it hasn’t changed just yet!

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netIf you open the top lid, the rice is inside like this. The amount of rice felt just about right overall, and this menu seems to have a similar amount! Since it’s a jeyuk-bokkeum and cabbage wrap combo, it should be good to eat while adjusting the seasoning of the rice as you go!

So let’s taste it right away. At first, to whet my appetite, I tried the rolled egg first! It’s a factory-made rolled egg, but since it does the basics well, even this was surprisingly decent!

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netActually, at first there was a lot of talk about it being “imitation egg” made by separating the egg white, but these days its quality has come up quite a bit. Making rolled egg at home is nice too, but lately buying it frozen is good value! For lightly whetting the appetite or a simple refresh, it seems good.

So I should try the main side right away! First, I picked up a piece of jeyuk-bokkeum and tasted it right away! It definitely has a slightly thicker feel than the typical jeyuk-bokkeum lunchbox cut. When you put it in your mouth and chew, the texture from that thickness is surprisingly satisfying too!

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe sauce itself isn’t super spicy as you might expect, but it’s seasoned a bit strongly. Of course, no one would eat the jeyuk-bokkeum entirely on its own, but you’ll probably want to at least wrap it in a cabbage leaf or eat it with rice.

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThat said, since it’s seasoned strongly, I found that even wrapping it in cabbage, you don’t really need separate ssamjang. Of course, jeyuk-bokkeum sauce and ssamjang have quite different flavors! But in terms of enjoying the jeyuk-bokkeum’s own flavor properly, maybe that’s a positive, haha! The jeyuk-bokkeum sauce itself isn’t too spicy and is a pretty by-the-book style, so anyone who likes it can enjoy it without any pressure.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netVerdict — Competing on the Fundamentals of Jeyuk-bokkeum
It’s a menu you eat with just jeyuk-bokkeum, cabbage wraps, and rice, but it goes down surprisingly smoothly. Toward the end, I even stopped wrapping it in cabbage and just picked it up to eat with rice! It’s a pretty basic menu, but of course, if those fundamentals aren’t properly in place, it ends up a so-so side dish — and for a lunchbox side, it felt upper-mid tier.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netWhat do you think!? Compared with menus that fussily pack in other side dishes, it seems much better! If you just need convenience store jeyuk-bokkeum and are looking for a simple meal, it’s a very solid choice. Be sure to give it a try!

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How much does the CU Bap-banchan-ban Jeyuk-bokkeum cost?
The price is 4,900 won. With 369g of total contents and 593kcal, it’s good value for a two-tier lunchbox that includes rice, jeyuk-bokkeum, and side dishes. You can buy it even cheaper by using PBICK app discounts or partner-card promotions.
Q. How is the Bap-banchan-ban Jeyuk-bokkeum put together?
It’s a two-tier lunchbox with rice on the bottom and side dishes on top, and the main is jeyuk-bokkeum made with domestic pork leg plus cabbage wraps. It also includes rolled egg and perilla-seed seasoned yeolgari cabbage as side dishes. Ssamjang is not provided separately.
Q. How does the Bap-banchan-ban Jeyuk-bokkeum taste? Is it very spicy?
Personally, rather than super spicy, it was a by-the-book jeyuk-bokkeum flavor seasoned a bit strongly. The pork is slightly thicker than a regular lunchbox, so the texture is good, and since it’s seasoned strongly, it’s great wrapped in cabbage without ssamjang or eaten with rice. For a lunchbox side, it’s upper-mid tier and easy to recommend.
