Hello! Today, I’m introducing a new lunchbox menu from 7-Eleven, a unique collaboration with Onjeong Tonkatsu, known for its spicy sauce. As the name Dizzyingly Spicy Tonkatsu suggests, it uses a very spicy sauce, and it’s said to be the spiciest among convenience store tonkatsu lunchboxes released so far. Even though I’m not good with spicy food, I was curious about how spicy it is, so I decided to try it! Let’s find out what this menu is all about.
Dizzyingly Spicy Tonkatsu Price and Features
Onjeong Tonkatsu, famous for its Western-style dishes, became known for its ‘Dizzyingly Spicy Tonkatsu’ as a challenge food. Just looking at the color of the sauce made me not want to try it, but now it’s available as a convenience store lunchbox! The price is 5,500 won.
For reference, the original menu’s sauce was notorious for being around 25,000 SHU (for reference, Buldak Bokkeum Myun is 4,400 SHU!). This 7-Eleven lunchbox is said to be similarly implemented, and they also released collaboration menus like kimbap. Although it’s not entirely original, it seems to have been somewhat compromised. Still, just in case, they added warning labels in several places.
The total content of this menu is 424g, with 845Kcal, and sodium is about 61% of the daily recommended intake. Just looking at it, it seems like a decent tonkatsu set lunchbox. The spiciness is unknown. Also, they advised only those confident to pour the sauce over the tonkatsu and heat it, which seems to be a precaution to prevent any complaints.
Composition of Dizzyingly Spicy Tonkatsu
Let’s take a quick look at the composition! Basically, the composition is quite similar to a typical tonkatsu set. The main difference would be this deep red tonkatsu sauce!
Since I’m not good with spicy food, I’ll pour the tonkatsu sauce into the middle section. The menu includes a few side dishes in addition to the basic tonkatsu!
The pork is said to be domestic sirloin! Onjeong Tonkatsu not only pursues spicy tonkatsu but also Western-style tonkatsu, so this menu seems to be similarly implemented.
Other than that, there’s nothing particularly noteworthy in the composition. Depending on the spiciness of this sauce, opinions on the menu may vary greatly. Looking at the menu composition, there’s not much to reduce the spiciness, so it might be a good idea to have some milk ready. Haha.
Taste of Dizzyingly Spicy Tonkatsu
Let’s taste it to check the spiciness. Even when heating it in the microwave, the spicy aroma gradually rises, already giving off a dangerous vibe! Haha.
I first dipped a piece slightly and took a bite! Initially, I thought it wasn’t that spicy, but as time passed, the spiciness gradually crept in, making me wonder if I really took a bite.
After a bite or two, I stopped at about two and a half pieces. Literally, the spiciness is probably the spiciest among the convenience store tonkatsu lunchboxes released so far. While I could at least eat other menus while saying ‘Oh, why is it so spicy,’ this one didn’t give me that thought. Haha.
This time, I didn’t pour the sauce directly on top but dipped it separately, and it was still quite spicy. If I had poured it on top, it would have been a disaster. Those who prefer such spicy sauces might find it like a challenge.
As mentioned earlier, corn salad, pickled radish, and pasta are not enough to reduce the spiciness of this menu. It might be a good idea to prepare some milk or something similar before eating!
Eventually, I ended up eating it like a regular Western-style lunchbox from the middle, but the menu composition was decent, so I ate it relatively well. However, the sauce was very spicy! I recommend reconsidering whether this is a menu you can handle before purchasing. Even when rinsing the lunchbox container, it made me cough.
