Today’s new menu from Goobne Chicken is the Choo Choo Chicken Steak. Released as a limited-time item for the year-end season, it’s a unique concept that’s not your typical chicken menu. It features chicken breast and tenderloin, cooked Goobne’s signature oven-roasted way, paired with steak sauce, wedge potatoes, onions, and butter for an unusual combination. With distinctive items like Galbi Cheonwang and Volcano—and more recently, their roasted drumsticks also being quite popular—Goobne Chicken has me quietly looking forward to this one as well.

Choo Choo Chicken Steak price and features

Choo Choo Chicken Steak is a limited-time menu Goobne Chicken introduced for the year-end season. Basically, it takes Goobne’s signature oven-roasted chicken, adds a sweet house steak sauce called Choo Choo Sauce, and tops it off with steak-style toppings. It was launched with the concept of “a flavor punch so surprising, it’s all about the sauce,” and I’m excited to see what it tastes like.

Also, a key feature of this item is that it’s not a standard chicken menu—it’s an oven-baked steak-style, bento-style meal. Following their roasted drumsticks, it seems to have been released as an oven-roasted main dish positioned as a meal box. The prices are as follows.

  • Choo Choo Chicken Steak 1 Set: 11,000 KRW
  • Choo Choo Chicken Steak 1.5 Set: 17,000 KRW
  • Choo Choo Chicken Steak 2 Set: 22,000 KRW

There are also various combinations available—like half a chicken, a sampler with two drumstick pieces, and Choo Choo Chicken Plus—so it’s worth keeping in mind. Pickles are included by default.

For reference, I ordered the 2 Set this time. Another unique point is that microwaving is required, though it did arrive warm from delivery. The notes say the butter may be partially or fully melted during cooking and delivery, and that it tastes even better if you heat it once in the microwave and then mix the sauce and butter together.

Now let’s quickly check what’s included. The key to this menu is, of course, not “chicken,” but a steak-style meal box you can enjoy as a full meal. Once you open the lid, you can immediately see it’s a hearty set, unlike typical side dishes.

It comes with chicken steak, a slightly brown steak sauce, and generous wedge potatoes topped with slightly melted butter and sliced onions. Just from the visuals, it even feels a bit like a heavy prep-meal.

It’s widely known that Goobne Chicken’s wedge potatoes are high quality, and the combination of chicken steak, sauce, and butter feels like a pretty solid idea. Still, ordering something like this from a chicken franchise is a bit unfamiliar, so I’m curious how the market will respond.

Back to the menu itself, the real highlight here is probably the Choo Choo Sauce. According to the promotional materials, it’s a house steak sauce that balances savory umami with a sweet-and-tangy profile. With butter added to bring out a richer, nuttier depth, they say it leaves a strong impression once you try it.

Choo Choo Chicken Steak taste

Let’s dig in. Before eating, I finished it off with another round in the microwave. The butter fully melts and the rich, nutty aroma comes through quite strongly, and the sauce smell spreads more intensely too. That said, I’m eating a different set from the one I showed earlier, and seeing the onion starting to sprout makes me wonder if this is pre-cooked and simply reheated for sale.

Still, once you take a bite, the chicken steak seems to use chicken breast or tenderloin, and it’s moist with a slightly chewy texture, with almost none of that dry, chalky feel. Since there’s no breading, it also feels much cleaner and lighter than typical chicken menu items.

The sauce is quite distinctive as well. The mild chicken pairs with a sweet-and-tangy steak sauce, giving it a really satisfying umami kick. With the melted butter added, it turns creamy and deeply rich. However, because the sauce flavor is so intense, some people will likely find it a bit overwhelming after a few bites.

Review of the long-awaited new menu

If it starts to feel a little rich as you eat, it’s nice to add a bit more onion like this. The onion I had was slightly sharp, but even that alone helped cut through the richness quite a bit. And if you eat it together with the wedge potatoes, it didn’t feel lacking at all as a full meal.

That said, since it’s clearly not “chicken,” the menu itself is fine, but it still leaves the question: if you were about to order chicken, would you really choose a steak-style meal box instead? The sauce is good, but there’s no heat at all, and the flavor and aroma are strong enough that you may tire of it quickly, so it could be polarizing.

Personally, I think it’s another menu with a unique concept and a solid taste. When it started to feel a bit heavy, pairing it with the included pickles worked well, and it felt suitable both as a meal and as a snack to go with drinks. The value is decent, too, and it’s a safe choice for a home party.
