Today’s winter limited-time new menu item from No Brand Burger is the Ghost Pepper Salsa Double. With a Scoville rating of 5,203 SHU, it boasts a seriously intense level of heat. They say it’s among the hottest items currently sold by burger franchises in Korea. Some of you might feel the urge to take on the challenge. Beyond the spiciness, it’s also a hefty build that left me fairly full, but the powerful heat was definitely the most memorable part. Let’s take a closer look at what it’s like.

Ghost Pepper Salsa Double price and highlights

This Ghost Pepper lineup includes two items: the Ghost Pepper Salsa Double and the Ghost Pepper Salsa Chicken. They were introduced as winter seasonal limited-time items under the concept “Make it even tastier with the ultimate spicy salsa.” While the Ghost Pepper Salsa Chicken is relatively lighter with a single chicken patty, the Salsa Double is a heavier build with a hash brown, double patties, and even cheese. Let’s start with a quick look at what’s inside. This menu uses No Brand Burger’s standard bun. With double patties from the premium line plus a hash brown, it’s fairly thick overall.

From the outside, you can’t really see the sauce setup clearly, but you can spot a bit of red sauce peeking out. They say the sauce for this menu is insanely spicy, but it’s hard to gauge just how much at a glance.

Next, let’s cut it in half to check the inside. Now you can clearly see how much sauce is in there. It’s supposed to be a spicy sauce, and there’s actually quite a lot more than I expected. The official description says it responds to consumer trends favoring strong,刺激적인 spicy flavors, but it also feels like they weren’t too concerned about broad appeal.

From the top down, it’s bun, pickle, veggies like lettuce and onion with mayo, salsa sauce, hash brown, double patties, cheese between the patties, and then salsa sauce again. Overall, it looks like a satisfying portion even as a full meal.

The sauce goes both above and below the patties, likely so the heat hits clearly rather than spreading vaguely as you eat. In the overall build, the only real element that might soften the heat is the small amount of mayo mixed with the veggies, so it really looks like a deliberately “all-in on spicy” menu.

Now, let’s taste it. Since I’m not great with spicy food, I should look at the overall build and value as well rather than focusing only on the heat. I remember the Megabyte Red, which had a similar setup, being fairly manageable, so I’m curious how this one compares.

With the first bite, the heat doesn’t build slowly or spread gently. You feel it almost immediately. Since “ghost pepper” is another name for bhut jolokia, which is known for being extremely hot, it also has a flavor similar to other comparable sauces sold on the market.

Because of the build, the texture is quite thick and hearty, and with double patties the base flavor is solid. The problem is just how spicy the sauce is. By the time I was about halfway through, the heat had pretty much ramped up to the max. Still, as I kept eating, it wasn’t completely impossible to finish.

Seeing the hash brown in this menu made me think that, rather than pushing only the extreme heat, since it’s also the start of the year they could’ve released another version with a different sauce to target a “McDonald’s Lucky Burger” kind of seasonal spot. They call it a salsa-style sauce, but the signature tanginess is barely noticeable, so it also gave off vibes similar to a Buldak burger or a “red burger.”

Fundamentally, it’s so spicy that the more you get into the sauce-heavy center, the more it tends to overpower the flavors of the other ingredients. After finishing, I was definitely full, but later on my stomach felt a bit irritated too. And it was the kind of menu where you end up thinking, “It wasn’t as impossible as I expected.” There’s already the Amazing Double, but with the same build and just a different sauce later on, this could be a pretty solid option.

After somehow finishing it, I wrapped up by cleansing my palate with fries, and the heat did settle down a bit. Still, it’s a menu where the spiciness lingers in your mouth for quite a while. If you’re the type who struggles with that late-rising heat, ordering a slightly greasy side could be a helpful tip.
