Hello. Today’s review covers Emart24’s controversial new lunchbox: the Special Meal “Jeongseong Hansang” Lunchbox, priced at a staggering 26,000 won. It’s an app-exclusive item available only through reservation. They sold a limited run of 1,000 units from February 19 to February 25. I picked mine up at the convenience store on the 25th and tried it right away. These days, many places struggle to keep lunchbox prices low. Even for a premium option, this feels a bit excessive. Let’s take a look at what’s in it.

Jeongseong Hansang Lunchbox: Price and Features

With 3,900-won lunchboxes being common these days, it’s hard to imagine a 26,000-won convenience-store lunchbox. Even 990-won lunchboxes have shown up at Homeplus recently. This is supposed to be a premium holiday-season item, but the price still feels extreme. I bought it at a slight discount using card deals and coupons. If you told me to pay full price, though, I don’t think I ever would.

The concept is a lunchbox “lavishly set with carefully selected delicacies from land and sea.” They even created a separate “Special Meal” logo for it. I cautiously predict they’ll keep releasing similar items from time to time. The price may change, of course.

The total weight is 582 g, with 812 kcal and sodium at 170% of the daily recommended intake. You might wonder why anyone would count calories at this price point. But it’s roughly in line with typical convenience-store items in the high-6,000-won range. With no processed foods included, it feels more focused on quality than quantity.

Jeongseong Hansang Lunchbox: What’s Inside

First, let’s check the contents. I bought it expecting a premium experience. But the included chopsticks and spoon were flimsy. They didn’t even include a single wet wipe—already a letdown. It immediately reminded me of Bon Dosirak.

This menu comes with a full lineup of side dishes. Given the price, it naturally skips fried frozen items and processed foods like ham or sausage. It also looks like more food than I expected. Viewed as a proper set meal like Bon Dosirak, it does look fairly neat for a convenience-store lunchbox.

Protein and Main Dishes

The main protein section includes stir-fried octopus made with Vietnamese octopus. The beef in the bulgogi doesn’t list a separate country of origin. The eel is from China. There’s also a bit of pickled red cabbage with ginger and some egg garnish.

Vegetable Sides

There are four vegetable sides: chamnamul (potherb), stir-fried aged kimchi, seasoned perilla leaves, and grilled deodeok (bellflower root). The portions aren’t large—just small amounts of each. They seem just right to eat alongside the rest of the meal.

Abalone Salad

The highlight may be the abalone salad. It includes about half a piece of abalone. They’ve also prepared shredded vegetables like cucumber, cabbage, carrot, and bell pepper as a side salad.

The oriental dressing for the salad sits under the vegetable compartment. When heating, microwave only the rice tray. Leave out the pickled red cabbage with ginger. The vegetables aren’t meant to be heated, so keep this in mind before using the microwave.

Taste Test: How Does It Actually Taste?

After heating the rice, I poured the oriental dressing over the salad and dug in. My first impression: it looks fairly neat for a convenience-store lunchbox. Judging by the composition alone, it didn’t feel that different from standard premium delivered lunchboxes. Then I remembered the price… and, well, you know.

I started with the salad as an appetizer. The vegetables were generally quite fresh, so there were no issues. The oriental dressing is rare in convenience-store lunchboxes, which was a nice touch.

Even if this was cooked quickly after taking reservations, it still took well over half a day to reach me. So the abalone being slightly dried out was probably unavoidable. It was also a bit cold. Heating it separately might be a good idea.

Among the vegetable sides, the grilled deodeok and stir-fried aged kimchi really hit the spot. However, the seasoning was generally on the salty side. Eating them with rice rather than on their own is the way to go.

The other main items tasted decent overall. The eel felt a bit lacking, but the octopus was impressively thick. Still, one question lingered: why release such an over-the-top menu? Even if Emart24 planned it with Shinsegae Food, it’s hard to imagine people pre-ordering a 26,000-won lunchbox at a convenience store and waiting days for it.

Is It Worth 26,000 Won?

The lunchbox is high quality and tastes good. In that sense, it’s satisfying. But when you weigh the value of “convenience-store lunchbox + 26,000 won,” it feels like it should taste even better. Bon Dosirak’s grilled deodeok-and-eel set is available for under 20,000 won. By the way, the eel actually tasted better paired with the stir-fried aged kimchi. Ha.

Final Thoughts

I wondered if it was a bait product to drive app downloads. That doesn’t seem to be the case either. In many ways, it was a vague and questionable menu. It feels like it may have been made to attract people like me—food reviewers, bloggers, and YouTubers.

Sales ended on the 25th, so I won’t be buying it again. Even if they re-release it, I’m not sure it would draw the same attention. Plenty of people likely picked it up and tried it. But it’s been pretty quiet on communities and social media. The lineup is too safe and unremarkable—just plain expensive. It doesn’t seem to be going viral. It was a menu that left me with a lot to think about. In the end, it feels like it created nothing but controversy.
