Hello! Today, I’m introducing a new ramen menu called Omogari Kimchi Stew Ramen. This menu has started being sold exclusively at Lotte Mart. It seems that ‘Omogari Global’, which focuses on Omogari Kimchi-related menus, has launched this as a test for retail stores. It looks like it might directly compete with a similar menu from GS25 in the market. Let’s find out what this menu is all about.

Price and Features of Omogari Kimchi Stew

Given the menu name and features, it’s inevitable to compare it with GS25’s Omori Kimchi Stew Ramen. This product is also launched with a rich kimchi stew theme. At Lotte Mart, a pack of 4 is sold for 6,980 won. Considering GS25’s Omori Ramen is 1,500 won per pack, it feels a bit pricey.

The kimchi stew ramen sauce reportedly contains as much as 93% kimchi, and it seems the concept is to add kimchi directly. However, I’ve heard that the word ‘Omogari’ is a common noun, making trademark registration difficult. I’m curious how this was resolved.

This menu’s content weight is 150g, with a calorie count of 555Kcal. Sodium accounts for 98% of the daily recommended intake. Since kimchi is directly included in the kimchi stew ramen, it’s hard to avoid the high sodium level. GS25’s similar menu shows almost the same figures. Looking at the ingredients, most of the chili powder and kimchi-related ingredients are domestically sourced.

The cooking method is very simple: add noodles, kimchi sauce, and powder soup to 500ml of water and boil for about 4 minutes and 30 seconds. Here, this ‘sauce’ seems to be related to kimchi.

Components of Omogari Kimchi Stew

Let’s quickly check the components before cooking. This menu consists of noodles and two types of soup! One is powder, and the other is liquid sauce.

The powder soup is contained in a green pouch and includes not just powder but also regular chunks.

The kimchi sauce is a liquid sauce. It seems to contain kimchi, and when you touch it, it feels like there are some chunks, reminiscent of a thicker gochujang sauce. This part is a bit unexpected! GS25’s menu includes real kimchi in a completely retort-style pouch, but this menu doesn’t seem to go that far.

Cooking Omogari Kimchi Stew

Let’s start cooking. Usually, when boiling two packs of ramen, you adjust the water and soup amount, but this time, I used the exact amount. Salty ramen like Omori Kimchi Stew Ramen can taste different if adjusted arbitrarily! First, I added the noodles and soup to the boiling water.

Next, I added the kimchi sauce. The kimchi sauce tastes more like kimchi filling rather than actual kimchi. It lacks a detailed feel.

The visual after cooking looks like this! It has a bit of broth rather than a thick kimchi stew, making it seem like it needs some meat. It’s a bit different from what I expected.

Taste of Omogari Kimchi Stew

The important thing is to taste it to know, and it seems possible to compare. First, I mixed it well again and took a bite!

When I just ate the noodles, it was hard to compare any specific differences. This one has a stronger spicy flavor rather than salty, and the umami is a bit lacking. It feels similar to a slightly bland and spicy homemade kimchi stew.

Overall, the spicy flavor is strong, but the stimulating taste is a bit weak, making it a taste that makes you want to add something rather than urgently craving rice. The detailed chunkiness of the kimchi is also somewhat lacking!

As mentioned earlier, you can definitely feel it just by tasting the broth! Personally, if you add a few slices of pork belly or a bit of green onion and real kimchi, it might feel like putting ramen in kimchi stew! So, it does feel a bit lacking in taste.

On the contrary, if GS25’s menu feels full and adding something seems like a luxury, this menu is a very good choice to enjoy as it is with a mild and refreshing feel. There are definitely people who prefer this style of kimchi stew over thick and rich broth!

Considering these points, it can be a quite satisfying menu, but if you expect something similar to Omori, you might be surprised by the different feel. What do you think? It was a menu that left some questions regarding value for money.
