Hello. Today’s new CU lunchbox menu is the latest in the “Overwhelming” series: CU Overwhelming Mountain-Piled Char-Grilled Bulgogi Pork Rice Bowl. CU is already selling a great-value 3,900-won rice-bowl lunchbox, and they’ve been rolling out Overwhelming-series rice bowls pretty quickly too. They pack it with a generous amount of rice and toppings—almost like an extra-large portion—so it’s quite filling. And since the previous releases have tasted pretty solid, I’m quietly looking forward to this one as well. Let’s take a closer look.

Overwhelming Mountain-Piled Char-Grilled Bulgogi Pork Rice Bowl price and features

It feels like CU’s 2025 Overwhelming series is wrapping up, because there hasn’t been any particularly notable news about new releases after this one. That’s part of why I picked it up, thinking this might really be the last. The concept is: “A mountain-piled rice bowl with an overwhelming weight. Char-grilled smoky flavor with lots of mayonnaise.” The price is 5,300 won.

The total weight is 349g, which feels quite hefty for a single rice-bowl item. It has 609 kcal, and compared with lunchboxes in a similar price range, it doesn’t feel particularly low. Sodium is about 61% of the recommended daily intake. They also say it’s a 30% increase in portion size compared to the average of their in-house rice-bowl lineup.

For reference, the seasoned meat in this rice bowl uses domestically sourced pork shoulder (front leg). They also say the rice, kimchi, red pepper powder, and more are mostly Korean-made as well.

Overwhelming Mountain-Piled Char-Grilled Bulgogi Pork Rice Bowl components

It’s a single-item rice bowl, but since it’s part of the Overwhelming lineup, let’s quickly check what’s included. The lunchbox comes with a plastic spork. Unlike the 3,900-won “just the rice bowl” menu, this one at least includes kimchi and pickled radish on the side.

The pickled radish and kimchi are separated like this, so you can keep them apart when microwaving. One thing, though: some of the seasoned meat or mayonnaise can smear onto the bottom, so I recommend not placing it directly on the table—use the lid as a coaster.

The seasoned meat and mayonnaise sit on one side of the tray. The amount looks about half a fist for an adult man. It doesn’t seem like a lot at first, but once you microwave it and spread it out, it’s enough to cover the entire top of the rice.

Since it’s a rice-bowl menu, the pork is thinly sliced in a bulgogi style, and it’s also cut into smaller pieces. There aren’t any big chunks, so it should be easy to scoop up with rice.

Overwhelming Mountain-Piled Char-Grilled Bulgogi Pork Rice Bowl taste

I microwaved the rice and seasoned meat right away. As mentioned earlier, it’s perfect to prop the lid up and use it for the pickled radish and kimchi.

Before microwaving, the sauce and pork fat were clumped together, making it look a bit thick and pasty. But as it melted, it turned surprisingly appetizing. Right before eating, I used a spoon to spread it evenly over the rice.

Once spread out, it finally looks like a proper rice bowl. Now you can just top each spoonful of rice with the meat and eat. Since it’s a rich bulgogi pork with mayonnaise, it mixes together easily as well.

Taking a big spoonful, even those who wondered whether bulgogi pork and mayonnaise would really work together will likely find it quite satisfying. The salty soy-sauce flavor balances out the slight richness of the mayo, and the overall savoriness feels even more pronounced.

That said, it’s only like that for the first few bites. As you keep eating, you can’t deny it starts to feel a bit heavy and you may tire of the flavor. That’s probably why it couldn’t be released as a 3,900-won standalone item, and why the product team decided it would be better to increase the portion and include kimchi and pickled radish.

Still, the biggest advantage is that, since it’s a rice bowl, you don’t have to think about side dishes. You can just dig in and finish a full meal quickly. Before I knew it, I’d eaten the whole thing.

If you want to grab a quick meal that still tastes pretty good, how about a rice bowl like this. It has a nice savory kick, comes with pickled radish and kimchi, and the portion is quite generous, so you probably won’t regret it. It’s a menu item I can reasonably recommend.
