[Korean Food] Popeyes Louis Black Pepper Burger

Home » K-food Review » K-Hamburger / Franchise » [Korean Food] Popeyes Louis Black Pepper Burger

Hello. Today’s new Popeyes burger menu I’m introducing is the Louis Black Pepper Burger, which uses a distinctive black-pepper-based sauce. A black pepper sauce made by adding black pepper to a creamy steak sauce. And it’s a menu item combined with the Louis Tong Burger, which uses a thick, whole chicken thigh patty fried as-is. With the rich-looking sauce added to the Louis Tong Burger that Popeyes has been emphasizing lately, it seems to be gaining popularity quickly since launch. Let’s take a closer look at what it’s like.

Louis Black Pepper Burger price and features

Since it’s a newly introduced menu item for the year-end season, it looks like they put a lot of effort into it, but surprisingly there weren’t many press releases, so it was hard to find details on the components. I ordered it myself. Based on the limited information available, the main point seems to be the juicy Louis patty—whole chicken thigh meat marinated with Louisiana seasoning—paired with the peppery kick of the black pepper sauce. It has enough size and heft to look filling.

The price is 8,000 KRW for the burger only in-store, and 8,800 KRW for delivery. The medium combo is 10,700 KRW in-store and 11,700 KRW for delivery. If you upgrade both the fries and drink to large, it’s an additional 800 KRW. The price doesn’t seem set too high for what you get.

Louis Black Pepper Burger components

Let’s take a quick look at what’s inside. As you’d expect from a series Popeyes pushes as a flagship for each event season, this one is pretty hefty too (they also released the Louis Black Burger last Halloween). Normally I’d cut it in half to check the inside, but this time it looks a bit too challenging, so I won’t. Haha.

The chicken patty uses a thick chicken thigh seasoned with Louisiana spices, with buttermilk added for a crispy exterior and moist interior—Popeyes’ “Louis whole-thigh patty.” Unlike KFC’s wider-shaped fillet, the look is reminiscent of Mom’s Touch’s Thigh Boneless patty. The bun, contrary to expectations, is a regular sesame bun rather than a brioche bun.

Unlike the Louis Tong Burger that includes sliced ham, this menu switches it out for bacon. There’s so much sauce that it’s almost ladled on from the top, so if you don’t unwrap it carefully, it may get on your hands.

For veggies, it basically includes lettuce and tomato, and it seems a little mayo is added. The original menu uses mayo as a base so it includes pickles, but since the sauce itself has a pretty intense pepper flavor, they seem to have left them out here.

Overall, it’s a very moist burger and also quite tall, so it’s not the easiest to eat. I usually split Mom’s Touch Thigh Boneless items in half too, but I couldn’t bring myself to try it with this one. Haha. Still, the build is fairly simple, so it shouldn’t be hard to review.

How the Louis Black Pepper Burger tastes

Now, let’s dig in. Since it’s pretty hefty, I started with the thinnest side first. The sauce is plentiful, so the flavor is bold (not in an overly harsh way), and because it uses thigh meat, there’s also a lot of juices and fat coming from the patty.

Basically, the sauce is built on a creamy, savory steak sauce, with the sharp bite and umami of black pepper added in, and it paired very well with the chicken patty. The peppery kick comes through quite strongly, and the slightly spicy flavor of the marinated chicken adds to it, so it is a rich menu overall, but it wasn’t too much to handle.

If you prefer chicken thigh patties, you’ll probably enjoy this a lot, and it also felt like it would taste great even if they used a chicken breast patty like the ones commonly used in standard chicken sandwiches. It would be a shame if this sauce were limited to a seasonal promo item.

Chicken thigh can feel a bit rich, and dipping it into a pepper-loaded gravy may taste somewhat unfamiliar to Korean palates. But once you get past the initial richness, it goes down surprisingly well, and by my standards, it was very tasty. It’s not like it was designed to be greasy on purpose. Haha.

Overall, it offered good value and a satisfying taste. In particular, the sauce is also sold separately, and it tasted good with chicken as well. (Though the other new item released alongside it this time was soy sauce chicken.) If you have it with a carbonated drink as a palate cleanser, the richness fades quickly, so if you’re curious, it’s worth trying at least once. Personally, I’d recommend it.
