[Korean Food] Root Vegetable Edition – Cheongnyeon Pizza

Today’s new menu from Cheongnyeon Pizza is the Famine-Relief Crops Edition. It’s a new item with a pretty unique name. True to the name, it’s built entirely around toppings that come to mind when you think of staple “famine-relief” crops, like sweet potato, potato, and corn. The topping combo is unusual, the portion is generous enough for a meal, and it’s also a decent pick for a home party. With reasonable value for money and almost no spicy, in-your-face flavors, it felt like something the whole family could enjoy. Let’s take a closer look at what it’s like.

Cheongnyeon Pizza Famine-Relief Crops Edition price and features

For the winter season of 2025, Cheongnyeon Pizza rolled out three menu items at once: Berlin Mega Meat, Kim Choonja Garlic Galbi Pizza, and the Famine-Relief Crops Edition. The first two are somewhat predictable in terms of toppings and flavor, so I ordered the one with the most distinctive name, the “Famine-Relief Crops Edition.” They say it uses classic staple ingredients—potato, sweet potato, and corn—to create a sweet and nutty pizza.

It comes in Regular (1–2 people) and Large (2–3 people). The price is 25,900 won for Large and 20,900 won for Regular. Since it’s the year-end season, most delivery platforms are running discounts—typically 4,000 won and up to 5,000 won—so it’s worth checking. With this menu, you get pickles, Cheongyang mayo dipping sauce, hot sauce, and Parmesan cheese by default. They also launched new sides: Triple Mushroom Cream Gnocchi and Pepperoni Cheese Kimchi Fried Rice. I ordered the kimchi fried rice as well.

Let’s check what’s included. This pizza has that signature pizza aroma, but the moment you open the lid, you also get a distinct sweet, nutty scent from the sweet potato and corn. Sweet potato pizza isn’t new, of course, but this one has an especially strong sweet aroma.

The most noticeable visual feature is the sheer density of toppings. Thanks to the hearty look that matches the unique concept, it seems like a good fit for a family meal or a home party. That said, because it sticks so closely to the “staple crops” concept, it does feel a bit lacking in ham or meat.

Looking closely at the toppings, from the outer edge inward you’ve got a corn edge, sweet potato mousse, roasted potato wedges, plus a bit of bacon and green bell pepper. It also seems to have a little mustard. Crucially, it doesn’t use marinara tomato sauce under the cheese, so it’s not heavy in a saucy way, but it can still feel a bit rich. I was curious how they’d balance that.

There are a lot of topping types, but if you think about it, most of them are basically carbs, so it’s a pretty heavy build. The changing flavor as you eat from the center outward is a point, but you also start wondering how it’ll feel after two or three slices. Especially since year-end is when a lot of meat- and shrimp-style pizzas come out, its positioning is a bit awkward.

Pepperoni Cheese Kimchi Fried Rice features

As an extra update, they also released new side items: Triple Mushroom Cream Gnocchi, Pepperoni Cheese Kimchi Fried Rice, and a few finger foods. Out of those, I ordered the Pepperoni Cheese Kimchi Fried Rice to add a bit of heat to the pizza’s sweet, nutty profile. It’s 5,700 won.

The concept is straightforward: kimchi fried rice topped with cheese and pepperoni. It’s probably a factory-made product that’s simply reheated, so the rice may be a bit dry (most of these fried-rice sides are similar these days). Still, as long as it delivers a clear spicy kick that pairs well with pizza, that’s what I’m hoping for.

Cheongnyeon Pizza Famine-Relief Crops Edition taste

Now, let’s taste it. With so many toppings, each slice isn’t huge, but it still feels quite hefty. When you pick it up, you need to hold it carefully with both hands so the toppings at the tip don’t slide off.

With the first bite, the overall flavor is sweet. Starting from the center, it’s a sweet potato mousse + potato combo, so it can feel less like pizza and more like bread topped with cheese and sweet potato mousse. There are a couple pieces of bacon, but the salty note is barely noticeable. There’s no heat at all, so kids might like it, at least.

Toward the crust, you get mustard sauce and the corn edge, but even then it doesn’t leave a strong impression. I found myself thinking it might’ve worked better if the corn had been lightly grilled and finished with a sweet corn seasoning. Since the corn edge goes in pretty much as-is, it also gives off a strong sweet-corn vibe. The kernels also fall off fairly easily.

In the end, you wind up enjoying it mainly for the fun of dipping the crust in sauce. But I don’t quite get why the default dipping sauce is Cheongyang mayo, since it usually works best to mellow out salty, spicy, punchy menus. This pizza doesn’t really need that kind of balancing, so it can feel like adding more on top of an already rich profile. A garlic sauce would’ve been a better match.

If you have a fairly average palate, by the third slice you’ll probably be reaching for the hot sauce and Parmesan. With hot sauce and Parmesan added, it’s reasonably enjoyable, so keep that in mind. Overall, it felt like a menu item that doesn’t have much built-in umami or breathing room in the flavor. Since it lacks that “this is it” hook that really clicks, it comes across as a bit bland.

If you’re someone who can’t enjoy pizza without the umami of tomato sauce or a bit of heat, this could feel like a tough sell. If you like pizzas with sweet potato mousse, it may be right up your alley. Surprisingly, it’s also a flavor profile that older adults might enjoy, but the issue is that it’s very high in carbs, which makes it hard to recommend.

Pepperoni Cheese Kimchi Fried Rice taste

Next, I took a bite of the Pepperoni Cheese Kimchi Fried Rice right away. If you’re planning to try the Famine-Relief Crops Edition pizza, this is a side you should really get with it. The spicy oil from the pepperoni and the stir-fried kimchi nicely fill in the heat that the pizza is missing. You also get extra umami as a bonus. It was a solid, no-surprises taste for the price.

I debated a lot between the new cream gnocchi and the kimchi fried rice, but if I’d ordered the cream gnocchi, I probably wouldn’t have been able to finish it. This one is an easy, low-burden side, so it’s worth keeping in mind when you order.
