[Korean food] Saengsaeng Flat Tteokbokki Noodles by Nongshim

Hello! Today, I’m introducing a new menu from Nongshim’s Saengsaeng series, Saengsaeng Flat Tteokbokki Noodles(생생납작떡볶이면). The name includes ‘noodles’, so it seems like it’s tteokbokki but should be considered as ramen! It’s a new addition to the fresh noodle series, which previously only had Saengsaeng Udon and Saengsaeng Yaki Udon, after a long time. Personally, I was hoping for a fresh noodle pasta menu, but unexpectedly, tteokbokki was released first! Let’s find out what this menu is like!

Price and Features of Saengsaeng Flat Tteokbokki

Nongshim has introduced tteokbokki in the fresh noodle lineup after a long time, specifically the flat tteokbokki menu! Just like Saengsaeng Udon was packaged in a square paper box, this menu is also released in a box! I bought this menu at the mart for 2,200 won. It’s quite affordable, isn’t it?

Nongshim Saengsaeng Flat Tteokbokki Noodles New Product

This menu features a flat tteokbokki-style noodle dish as its main concept, with a sauce finished with gochujang, fish cake broth, parsley, and roasted black sesame. It’s basically closer to ramen than instant cooking or meal kits, so the composition seems quite simple. The cooking method is to boil it like regular bibim ramen, then drain all the water and mix in the sauce and additional powder.

Flat Tteokbokki Composition Explanation

The total content of this menu is 258g, with 565Kcal and sodium at 94% of the daily recommended intake. The content and calories are similar to regular packet ramen, but the sodium is quite high, as expected from tteokbokki!

Composition and Cooking Method of Saengsaeng Flat Tteokbokki Noodles

Let’s take a quick look at the composition and then start cooking! Like Saengsaeng Udon, the fresh noodle menu mainly consists of tteokbokki noodle strands, with a liquid-style tteokbokki sauce and additional powder sauce.

Simple Explanation of Ramen Composition

It seems that the reason for the additional powder, despite being tteokbokki, is to give a slight fish cake broth taste, as mentioned in the concept. It also seems to include parsley and roasted black sesame.

After preparing boiling water, I immediately added the noodles! I thought the characteristic vinegar preservative from Saengsaeng Udon might be present here too. Some people rinse Saengsaeng Udon before boiling because of that! Fortunately, this menu didn’t have a strong smell, so I boiled it as is. Anyway, all the water is drained!

After cooking, I transferred the noodles to a bowl and poured the liquid sauce over them first. Although I was told to drain all the water, the noodles quickly absorbed the water and dried out. So, I added a tablespoon of the boiled water!

The texture of the noodles is chewy but can break easily, so I mixed them carefully. A spicy aroma rose quite strongly while mixing!

After mixing everything, I sprinkled the additional powder on top. Originally, it was supposed to be mixed together, but while taking photos, this method looked more visually appealing! It even looks like cheese powder, doesn’t it?

Taste of Saengsaeng Flat Tteokbokki

Let’s taste it right away! I thoroughly mixed in the additional powder sprinkled on top! I recommend mixing it with the liquid sauce when you mix it. It doesn’t mix well if you wait too long!

I took a bite! The taste was very much like tteokbokki, spicy and savory, reminiscent of dry tteokbokki with fish cake broth added and cooked again. Haha.

Tteokbokki Broth Taste Comparison

The taste of the tteokbokki sauce was surprisingly not like the sweet pre-made sauce often found in kimbap specialty stores. It had a slightly sweet taste, but the umami was rich, making it one of the top flavors among the tteokbokki or rabokki-type ramen I’ve tried.

Well, this part may vary depending on personal preference, but of course, it can’t be compared to instant tteokbokki, but it seems quite delicious if you add other ingredients and make it! Depending on your taste, adding some fish cake to boil together or mixing in eggs and sausages was quite a good taste.

Overall, it’s a spicy taste that enhances the appetite and adds umami, so even I, who can’t handle spicy food well, ate a bowl without realizing it! If you like this kind of tteokbokki, I recommend getting other ingredients and making it together!
