Hello. Today’s new CU item is a chilled ready-to-eat product made in collaboration with Tokyo Gyudon, Tokyo Gyudon Cheese Demi Hamburg Rice Bowl. Compared with convenience store lunchboxes, ready-to-eat items tend to get less attention. Still, this one has decent quality and a solid setup. So, it’s hard to call it amazing value for money. However, among convenience store ready meals, it keeps a fairly acceptable level of quality and flavor. That’s why I decided to review it. Let’s take a closer look.

Cheese Demi Hamburg Rice Bowl: Price & Key Features

This item actually launched in the second half of 2025. By early February 2026, when I bought it, it had already been out for four or five months. Still, I saw it when sorting by newest posts and decided to order it. It seems it was briefly discontinued and then released again. The price is KRW 5,900.

Concept & Menu Highlights

As far as I know, Tokyo Gyudon stores have katsu rice bowls, but not a dedicated hamburg rice bowl. So I was a bit curious about the vibe. The concept is a savory, juicy flavor. It features a moist meat patty with Tokyo Gyudon’s signature sauce and rich cheese. Since it’s a convenience store ready meal, it likely won’t be loaded with toppings. So the hamburg steak and cheese are probably the main focus.

Nutrition Info & How to Heat

The total weight is 388g including the rice, sauce, and cheese. It comes in at about 683kcal. At KRW 5,900, it’s priced similarly to premium convenience store lunchboxes. However, since it’s a ready meal rather than a full lunchbox, the value for money is naturally a bit lower.

For heating, slightly open the hamburg bowl sauce and the microwavable rice, then microwave them first. Next, put the rice and sauce into the container and place the cheese on top. Then microwave for an additional 30 seconds. Finally, sprinkle on the included red pepper and parsley topping to finish.

Cheese Demi Hamburg Rice Bowl: What’s Inside

Now, let’s quickly check what comes with it. This menu uses the familiar rectangular container often seen with convenience store ready meals. Inside, you get the hamburg rice bowl sauce, microwavable rice, and a few add-ons. Since it’s a rice bowl, it also includes a plastic spoon by default.

Cheese & Topping Details

Because of the menu style, the sliced cheese comes separately. In the ingredients list, it’s labeled as strong cheddar cheese. As for the red pepper and parsley, it seems to be crushed red pepper and dried parsley. The rice is CJ’s budget-friendly microwavable rice, Crait.

Cooking the Cheese Demi Hamburg Rice Bowl

Now, let’s cook it. First, as mentioned earlier, I slightly opened the microwavable rice and the hamburg bowl sauce and microwaved them. Then I poured them into the container in this order: rice first, sauce second.

Adding the Hamburg Steak & Cheese

There are almost no chunks in the sauce. Instead, there’s one thick hamburg steak. It is thick, but it doesn’t seem very large. I placed the sliced cheese on top, covered it with the package, and microwaved it briefly to finish. By the way, the red pepper and parsley topping is more generous than you’d expect. So be careful not to spill it like I did.

As you can see, I didn’t realize there would be that much. So I ended up spilling it a bit. I just hope the red pepper isn’t too spicy.

First off, I really like how the sliced cheddar cheese looks melted on top. If the demi-glace sauce doesn’t lean too hard into a teriyaki-like flavor, it should be easy to eat. The value for money is a bit questionable. Still, looking at the menu itself, isn’t this pretty decent?

Cheese Demi Hamburg Rice Bowl: Taste Test

Now, let’s dig in. The portion isn’t huge. However, for a simple one-meal option, it doesn’t feel too lacking.

Hamburg Steak: Solid Quality for a Ready Meal

I cut off a piece of the hamburg steak right away. Then I scooped up a spoonful with the demi-glace sauce and rice and took a bite. The overall impression is surprisingly good. I’ve been trying various convenience store ready meals lately for reviews. Among the ones I’ve had recently, this ranks fairly high in quality.

If you’re careful not to spill the red pepper topping like I did, cooking shouldn’t be difficult. The red pepper also isn’t that spicy. So it didn’t feel too intense. However, it is a bit disappointing that there aren’t many toppings.

The steak itself is decent for an instant-style item found in convenience store ready meals. It’s much better than a typical “3-minute” hamburg steak. It also has a nice amount of juiciness and meaty aroma. Of course, if you expect something truly high-end, it may still feel a bit lacking.

Not Enough Toppings, and Only Sauce Left at the End

However, once you finish the steak, you’re left with rice, sauce, and a bit of cheese. From that point on, it gets pretty plain. The demi-glace sauce is milder than expected, so it isn’t overly stimulating. Still, because there are no toppings, eating just rice and sauce felt a bit boring.

Final Verdict

Personally, this was one of the better-quality convenience store ready meals. The demi-glace sauce is mild, so it’s easy to eat. However, at KRW 5,900, it’s priced similarly to premium convenience store lunchboxes. So the value for money feels a bit weak. Since the only real topping is a single hamburg steak, once you finish it, you’re left with just rice and sauce. That bland finish was also a downside. Still, for a convenience store ready meal, I’d say the quality is relatively solid.
