[Korean Food] Puradak Gochu Mayo Chicken

Home » K-food Review » K-Chicken » [Korean Food] Puradak Gochu Mayo Chicken

Hello. Today’s Puradak Chicken menu feature is Gochu Mayo Chicken. This isn’t a new item; it’s been quite a long time since it launched as one of Puradak’s signature menus alongside Black Alio. Ever since it was introduced with gochu mayo sauce and jalapeño toppings, it’s been consistently loved, but because it’s basically part of the core lineup, I never really had the chance to do a proper review. So I ordered it again and decided to review it. Let’s take a closer look at what it’s like.

Gochu Mayo Chicken price and highlights

I usually focus my reviews on new releases, so I didn’t really have an opportunity to cover Gochu Mayo Chicken since it’s a relatively old menu item that came out around 2015. But when I saw that they started running ads again—using IU as the model for an existing menu rather than a new one—I decided to order it for the first time in a while, and I wrote up a review while I was at it.

The price is KRW 21,900 for delivery, and the boneless and wing combo are KRW 24,900. Right now, signature menu items are discounted by KRW 3,000 on delivery apps in December, so if you haven’t tried it yet, this could be a good chance. This time, I ordered the boneless version. And even when you order Gochu Mayo, they still include the gochu mayo sauce separately.

Gochu Mayo Chicken components

I went ahead and unboxed it right away. Since the sauce is what it is, there wasn’t any particularly distinctive aroma. The first thing that stood out was the generous amount of jalapeño pickle topping.

For some reason, compared to how I remember it from years ago, it feels like there are way more jalapeño toppings than I expected. Because of that, more than the chicken smell itself, the jalapeño aroma comes through very strongly.

At this point, it almost feels like it should be called jalapeño mayo rather than gochu mayo, but since the base sauce is gochu mayo, I guess it still works. Honestly, if they used fresh chili peppers, it would’ve been even more unique, haha.

If I remember correctly, Puradak Chicken’s first menu item was Gochu Mayo, and both then and now, their oven-fried style chicken is really delicious. It’s a bit pricey, but the quality of the boneless chicken is quite good as well. There’s a reason I keep reviewing it.

While preparing this review, I looked back through all my previous new-menu reviews. Because their cooking method is distinctive, it really feels like they put more care into launching new items than other franchises do. Maybe that’s why this menu, when I first tried it, left such a strong impression.

The taste of Gochu Mayo Chicken

So, thinking back on the memories, I went straight in for a taste to see what Gochu Mayo Chicken is like after all this time. Just from the name, you might expect it to be very spicy, but in reality it’s sweet, with a gentle chili aroma and a lightly tingling kick that makes it really enjoyable.

Even though it had been a really long time, it was exactly that memorable taste I remembered. The heat seems to come mostly from the jalapeño topping, so it wasn’t very spicy. The sauce is slightly thick yet still moist, so it doesn’t feel sticky in your mouth, and it has a subtle sweetness and nuttiness.

The sauce isn’t greasy, so if you eat it here and there with the toppings, the flavor is excellent. It’s one of the rare menus that doesn’t really make you think of pickled radish on the side, haha.

And the gochu mayo sauce. This is also really good. You might wonder if it makes sense to dip it into the same sauce that’s already on it, but enjoying it as a dipping sauce gives it a different feel, and you can taste the flavor more deeply.

In fact, like other Puradak menus, as you get closer to the bottom, the sauce tends to pool there and the flavor becomes stronger, so this part may feel different depending on your preference. With this one in particular, thanks to the toppings, the jalapeño flavor comes through quite strongly toward the end, which is one of its defining traits, haha.

These days, so many new chicken items come out, and compared to 2015 there are far more franchises, so it’s harder to try everything. For me, it probably tasted even better because it had been so long. You don’t have to force yourself to finish all the jalapeños, and there’s plenty of them, so there wasn’t anything to feel disappointed about. It also felt less heavy after eating, which I liked. How about trying a signature menu again after a while? And don’t miss the discount—make sure to take advantage of it.
