Hello. Today’s new chicken menu is BHC’s “King” series. Following Sweet Chili King, they’ve released Soy Garlic King with a “crispy seasoned chicken” concept. Since Sweet Chili King seemed to get a quietly solid response, they’ve now introduced a soy sauce–seasoned chicken concept. They say it delivers a unique taste and texture by adding deep garlic flavor to the savory, salty umami of soy sauce seasoning. Let’s take a closer look at what it’s like.

Dipping Sauce & Boneless Order Notes

When you order this menu, the dipping sauce included by default is Sweet Garlic Sauce. Normally, when I order from BHC, I usually go with the standard bone-in chicken. Today, though, I tried the boneless version.

I’ve also heard plenty of very negative reviews about BHC’s boneless chicken. Still, I ordered it thinking this sauce might cover things up a bit.

Soy Garlic King: What’s Inside

Now, let’s check what you get. True to the name, the moment you open the lid, a strong garlic and soy sauce aroma hits you. The chicken, coated in a deep-colored soy sauce glaze, looks pretty appetizing. The color is on the darker side.

Thick, Dry-Style Sauce

The issue is that what I ordered is BHC boneless. It’s been so long since I last had it that I wondered if anything had changed. Still, the sauce on this menu is very thick and rich. It was similar with Sweet Chili King. Because the concept is “crispy to the last bite,” the sauce seems designed not to soak into the batter easily.

It’s so thick that there’s barely any sauce pooling at the bottom. So I’m guessing it’s brushed on rather than dunked and drained. I remember Sweet Chili King having a strong sauce flavor even with a thin coating. This one feels similar.

Garlic Aroma & Sweet Garlic Dipping Sauce

And of course, as the name suggests, there’s garlic in the mix. Compared to the strong soy sauce aroma, the garlic scent isn’t as intense as you might expect. Instead, it’s fairly subtle, so it feels less overpowering than anticipated.

The Sweet Garlic dipping sauce looks a bit runny, and it seems like it contains real garlic. When you smell it, the garlic aroma comes through quite strongly, with a slightly sweet note. In a way, it feels like the garlic level is meant to be adjusted with this sauce. Still, I’ll have to taste it to see how well it pairs.

Soy Garlic King Taste Test

Now, let’s taste it. First, compared with typical soy sauce chicken, the biggest difference is how intense the sauce is. It was similar with Sweet Garlic King too. Because of that, you immediately get that heavy, rich soy sauce flavor.

Original: Deep Soy Sauce Flavor with a Spicy Kick

It’s built on a deep soy sauce aroma and taste, with a bit of pepper and garlic. There’s also a mild spiciness, so it may be a little challenging for younger kids. After tasting it, I understood why they separated it into Original and Honey.

For adults, it’s pretty approachable. For kids, though, it could definitely feel spicy. It also has that peppery, nose-tingling heat. Still, if you compare it to instant ramen, it’s far below Shin Ramyun.

The Limits of the Boneless Texture

However, even with this sauce, it couldn’t overcome BHC’s signature boneless texture that feels a bit like nuggets. That’s probably why people say you shouldn’t order BHC boneless. It seems hard to fix with sauce alone. So this time, I think it’s best to judge it mainly by the sauce, not the chicken itself.

Pairing It with Sweet Garlic Dipping Sauce

Next, I dipped it in the Sweet Garlic sauce. The sharp garlic flavor becomes much more pronounced, and the gently sweet taste helps slightly neutralize the strong aroma of the rich soy sauce glaze. Usually, salty menus like this pair with yogurt- or cream-based sauces. So boosting garlic while dialing down soy sauce feels like an unusual choice.

That said, the included dipping sauce has a fairly strong garlic aroma, so keep that in mind. If you want a different dipping sauce, ordering another option is totally fine. A sauce that adds more heat could work well too. Also, don’t order the boneless. I tried it again after about 2–3 years, and it’s honestly surprising how nothing has changed.

Overall Verdict

Overall, I was quite satisfied with the sauce, and the pairing with the unique Sweet Garlic dipping sauce was pretty good too. However, it also reinforced the lesson that you shouldn’t order boneless at BHC. The thick, rich soy sauce didn’t soak into the batter, so it stayed crispy to the end. Plus, the soy sauce base blended with pepper and a subtle garlic note to create a bold, weighty flavor. If you like soy sauce chicken and usually order bone-in, I recommend giving it a try.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What does Soy Garlic King taste like?

It has a bold, heavy flavor built on a thick, rich soy sauce glaze, with pepper and a subtle garlic aroma. It stays crispy to the end, and it’s mildly spicy. Adults will likely find it easy to eat, but it may be a bit spicy for kids. If you dip it in the Sweet Garlic sauce, the garlic flavor stands out more.

Q. Is Soy Garlic King better as boneless or bone-in?

I strongly recommend the bone-in chicken. BHC’s boneless chicken tends to have a nugget-like texture that can be disappointing. To really enjoy the crispiness that’s this sauce’s main strength, it’s better to order the standard bone-in option.
