Health-angled lunch boxes have become a regular fixture in Korean convenience stores, and CU has built out that shelf since its The Healthy Diet line. Today’s pick is CU’s new low-sugar high-protein chicken breast dosirak, a dosirak being a Korean packed meal. This time CU teamed up with the Seoul city government, of all partners, on a low-sugar, high-protein release. Word was that it stays light without feeling like a punishment, so I bought one right away. Overall it reads less like true diet food and more like a slightly lighter version of a normal meal. Let’s take a look.

High-Protein Chicken Dosirak Price and Numbers
Not long ago Emart24 released a box built from nothing but real chicken and egg, playfully named Chicken or Egg, and I reviewed that one too. Across the board, it seems strict diet-concept boxes just don’t sell the way they used to, because that one also compromised a little on flavor. This release looks like it lands in similar territory through the Seoul collaboration. The price is 5,600 won.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netTotal net weight is 355g with 514 Kcal, and sodium sits at 42% of the daily recommended intake. Sugars come in at just 1%, clearly low, while protein reaches a solid 67%. That said, fat and saturated fat aren’t low in absolute terms, so keep that in mind. Heating takes 1 minute 20 seconds in a 1,000W microwave, and you need to remove both the lid and the inner tray first.

What’s in the Box
Let’s run through the contents. This box comes with five sides, and the whole thing revolves around chicken breast and egg. Of those five, two are chicken breast items and one is egg, with the rest serving as light supporting sides.

First comes the chicken breast and egg pairing. The rolled egg is a simple two pieces, the press ham is a chicken breast ham, and the chicken breast itself is dressed with a tomato-based sauce.

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe chicken breast looks sous-vide cooked, the same as similar CU items I’ve had before. There have been boxes with whole smoked chicken breast in the past, and this one holds slightly less. Mine came with about three pieces. Since they seem to portion by weight, other boxes should land around three or four as well.

The supporting sides are braised tofu and a simple white kimchi. Presumably that’s down to the low-sugar, high-protein brief. The rice appears to have chickpeas mixed in. Lentils had their moment a while back, so this looks like an attempt to hit a similar note with chickpeas instead.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netTaken together, it faithfully reproduces the health-food format you’ve seen at CU and other convenience store chains. As the nutrition panel showed, sugar is clearly low and protein runs fairly high, which makes it a reasonable compromise to eat at a sensible level.

Of course, no matter how health-focused a product is, flavor still matters. This one was built to hit a reasonable middle ground, so it should work fine as a simple meal. Shall we dig in?

I started with a piece of the sous-vide chicken breast. The sauce reads a bit like tonkatsu sauce, honestly. Tomato paste as a base with a light teriyaki note folded in, exactly that sort of thing. It never gets heavy, adding just enough acidity and savoriness to the soft chicken breast.

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe chicken breast itself is quite tender, which makes it easy to eat. It’s lightly seasoned too, so it pairs well with the rice. Naturally, being chicken breast at its core, it comes across as noticeably plainer than grilled chicken or braised chicken dishes.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe press ham and rolled egg also turned out to work nicely with rice. Both keep the seasoning light in line with the concept, which makes them ideal to pick at between bites as the meal goes on.

The chickpeas were cooked through nicely rather than left hard. The braised tofu came across as lightly grilled tofu given a thin coat of seasoning, and it carried almost no sweetness either. It leans slightly spicy, so one or two pieces work well whenever things start feeling too plain.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe white kimchi has a touch of seasoning as well, so adding a piece or two between other items works nicely. Overall this is a box with almost no heat and almost no sweetness, which means mixing the sides together is the way to get the most out of it. Why the Seoul city government was the partner here, though, I still can’t quite work out.

It left me comfortably full afterwards. Since the whole thing is built on a health concept even at some cost to flavor, it works well as a deliberately mild meal. If you have to solve lunch with a convenience store box but find salty, sweet options too much, this is a good pick. Worth trying once if you’re curious. For anyone traveling in Korea and worried about sodium in convenience store food, it’s one of the gentler options on the shelf.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Is this genuinely diet food?
Partly. Sugars are clearly low at 1% of the daily value and protein is high at 67%, but fat and saturated fat aren’t low in absolute terms. Think of it as a lighter alternative to a salty, sweet lunch box rather than strict diet food.
Q. How does it actually taste?
Mild across the board, in my experience. The tomato-based sauce on the chicken tastes like tonkatsu sauce crossed with teriyaki and brings some acidity and savoriness, yet there’s almost no heat or sweetness. Mixing the sides together gets you the most flavor.
Q. How much protein do you actually get?
67% of the daily value in a 355g box at 514 Kcal. It comes from three or so pieces of sous-vide chicken breast, a chicken breast press ham, rolled egg, braised tofu and the chickpeas in the rice.
