Today’s new GS25 release is the October Lunch Box of the Month, Hyeja Jipbap Nanulsurok Chanranhage, a name that roughly means “the more you share, the more radiant.” It comes from the Hyeja Jipbap series, which is known for loading its boxes with side dishes. “Hyeja” is Korean slang for generous, great-value portions, and “jipbap” means a home-cooked meal. This box packs in 13 side dishes, with ttukbaegi bulgogi and a pork loin cutlet as the mains, plus favorites such as rolled omelet, stir-fried sausage and tofu with kimchi. A share of the proceeds is reportedly donated, which makes it an even more meaningful lunch box. For short, I’ll call it the Hyeja October Lunch Box in this review. Let’s find out what it’s like.

Hyeja October Lunch Box: Price and Highlights
This box is a collaboration with the film “Yeojeonhi Chanranhage” (literally “Still Radiant”), which Kim Hye-ja recently starred in. As a Lunch Box of the Month, it is only officially around until the end of October, but in my experience these usually stay on sale into early or mid-November. Ha. Part of the proceeds is donated to World Vision, an international relief and development organization, and is slated to support children at risk of missing meals. You can enjoy a tasty meal and take part in something good at the same time, so I recommend trying it at least once while it is on sale. The price is 6,900 won.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netIt is on the pricey side for a convenience store lunch box. But the box holds 13 side dishes and two meat mains, so I would even call it good value. In total it weighs 603 g and carries 905 kcal, which is quite hefty. With a portion this size, the sodium also reaches 110% of the daily recommended intake. Heat it for 2 minutes 30 seconds in a 1,000W microwave, and heating it with the lid on is reportedly fine.

Let’s check the lineup. The moment the lid comes off, you can see just how many side dishes there are. The yellow rolled omelet, the brown bulgogi and the red kimchi make a colorful spread that clearly stands out.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netTwin Mains: Ttukbaegi Bulgogi and Pork Loin Cutlet
First, the ttukbaegi bulgogi main. Soy-braised bulgogi is simmered down until just saucy, with a generous bed of glass noodles underneath. It feels like bulgogi from an earthenware pot (ttukbaegi) moved straight into the box, and the seasoned broth soaks all the way through. The other main, the pork loin cutlet, is a thick cutlet in a crunchy breading with a compartment of its own, so it has real presence. On top of that, down below there is a side dish that looks like pasta, though I couldn’t tell what it was.

The side dishes include stir-fried fish cake, shredded dried squid, fried dumplings, pasta salad, stir-fried mushrooms, perilla seed stir-fry, seasoned radish (mu-namul) and pickled perilla leaves, among others. The portions are not large, but the lineup is solid, so you get quite a range of flavors.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netA rolled omelet usually shows up as a single token piece, but here there are three generous slices. The dubu kimchi puts stir-fried kimchi right beside golden pan-fried tofu, so you can pile the kimchi on top of the tofu.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netOverall, the box sets ttukbaegi bulgogi and the pork loin cutlet as twin mains and brings out the crowd-pleasers, including rolled omelet, stir-fried sausage and dubu kimchi. Think of it as a full home-cooked table packed into a single lunch box.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netTaste Test: Ttukbaegi Bulgogi, Pork Cutlet and Sides
Time to dig in. After microwaving it and lifting the lid, the sweet aroma of the bulgogi seasoning rose up and made me want rice right away. I started with the ttukbaegi bulgogi. The sweet and salty soy seasoning had soaked evenly into the meat and the glass noodles, and it tasted exactly like proper ttukbaegi bulgogi.

The seasoned glass noodles were so chewy that I kept reaching for them before the meat. Spooning the saucy seasoning over a little rice was a treat too. Of course, it would have been good with only meat in it. Ha. It was just right alongside rice.

The pork loin cutlet kept the savory crunch of its breading even after reheating, and the loin gave it a clean, mild bite. Alternating it with the sweet bulgogi kept me from getting tired of either. And the side dish I had mistaken for pasta turned out to be a stir-fry with a slight fish-cake flavor. It went surprisingly well with rice, too.

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe remaining side dishes were quite decent as well. A few might divide opinions, but the spread was as generous as the mains, so it was easy to rotate between them. Almost none of the sides overlap in feel, which suits the concept of enjoying many flavors in a single meal.

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netRolled Omelet and Dubu Kimchi
The rolled omelet was soft and fluffy with a mild seasoning, ideal for breaking up the bold mains. Without kimchi you might expect to feel a little let down, but the other side dishes quietly filled that role.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netTopping the soft tofu with tangy stir-fried kimchi gave a familiar, satisfying taste. Past the halfway point, there were so many side dishes that the rice seemed likely to run out first. Taking my time with the sides, I enjoyed picking and choosing right to the end, and the portion was generous enough to leave me full from a single meal.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netFinal Verdict: A Home-Style Spread of 13 Dishes
Personally, I think anyone who likes sampling a bit of everything will be satisfied with this lunch box. That said, in exchange for the number of side dishes, each one is on the small side. Anyone who wants a generous helping of one main may find it slightly lacking. I would recommend it to people who love lunch boxes with plenty of side dishes, to those who want bulgogi and pork cutlet in one go, and to those who want to join a donation while enjoying a good meal. If you are in Korea while it is on sale, it is a handy way to try a home-style meal built from lots of small dishes.
