Today’s review covers Seven-Eleven’s Appetizing 9-Side Dosirak (a dosirak is a Korean lunch box). It is the textbook example of a multi-side-dish lunch box. Plenty of people love a single jeyuk (stir-fried pork) main or an unusual convenience store lunch box. Others stick to multi-side-dish boxes. This one is built for that second group. It has a basic feel, with the dishes you would expect from a convenience store lunch box. The price is reasonable, the portion is moderate and the taste is pretty good, so it makes a filling meal. Let’s see what’s inside.

Appetizing 9-Side Dosirak: Price and Highlights
This lunch box has been out for about half a year. Even so, it still shows up steadily in the lunch box corner at Seven-Eleven, a real steady seller. I had never reviewed it, so I bought one right away. It is a classic 9-side box. Apart from the number of side dishes, there is no big concept, which is a feature in its own way. Ha. The price is 5,700 won. Ordering through the Seven-Eleven app or a delivery app sometimes comes with a discount. Checking before you buy might get you a slightly lower price.

Sodium is 69% of the daily recommended value, which does not seem all that high for the amount of food. Both the calories and the price are on the high side. Still, with nine side dishes and four of them meat dishes, a price in the high 5,000-won range seems reasonable. To heat it, microwave it at 1,000W for 1 minute 50 seconds. It says you can put the lid back on after removing the film.

Let’s check the contents. I opened the lid and went through the sides one by one. On the top row, from the left, are stir-fried kimchi, radish namul and two Vienna sausages side by side. On the right, a chunky pork cutlet takes up a whole compartment by itself. That makes nine sides, right? Ha.

Every small compartment is packed full, so the number of side dishes clearly looks large. There are also radish namul, pickled perilla leaves and Vienna sausages.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe pork cutlet has a thick breadcrumb coating and a round shape, so its size felt decent. Judging by the ingredient list, it uses pork loin and pork hind leg. The sauce comes pre-applied underneath.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netMoving to the lower right, two main meat sides are packed in. Two bulgogi dishes sit one above the other. One is gochujang bulgogi with a well-soaked red seasoning. The other is soy sauce bulgogi in a brown soy seasoning. That lets you pick between a spicy flavor and a sweetish one. Overall, the meat sides are soy sauce bulgogi, gochujang bulgogi, tonkatsu, tteokgalbi and Vienna sausages. Stir-fried kimchi, radish namul, seasoned namul and stir-fried fish cake join them. You could call it a convenience store version of a gucheop-bansang (a traditional Korean table setting with nine side dishes).

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netTaste Test: Pork Cutlet, Two Bulgogi and Familiar Sides
Time to dig in. As soon as I lifted the lid after microwaving, the smell of bulgogi seasoning rose up. It made me crave rice. I started with the biggest item in this box, the pork cutlet.

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netAfter heating, the pork cutlet lost a little of its crunch. The coating is thick, though, so the savory flavor was still very much alive. The tteokgalbi was coated with plenty of sweetish sauce and had a pleasantly tender bite. True to a classic lunch box side, the Vienna sausages tasted familiar and salty.

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThen came the two main bulgogi dishes. The soy sauce bulgogi was well soaked in a sweetish, salty seasoning, so it made an easy, dependable rice side. The gochujang bulgogi was spicy and sweet. Alternating it with the soy sauce bulgogi kept me from getting tired of the flavor. Comparing two kinds of bulgogi in one box turned out to be quite a bit of fun. Ha.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netIn terms of texture, the radish namul eaten between the meat sides is crunchy, and the fish cake is chewy. The distinctive saltiness of the pickled perilla leaves adds to a nicely varied meal. The stir-fried kimchi had a savory depth, so it went well with the meat sides.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netPast the middle of the meal, meat sides and fried items follow one another. A slightly oily feeling builds up. Having radish namul and kimchi alongside tidies up the mouth, though, so I could enjoy it to the end. Each side is small, but there are so many of them. I never felt short of sides before I finished a whole bowl of rice.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netFinal Verdict: A Safe Box of Familiar Sides
Personally, I think this suits people who prefer a bit of everything to one big main. It leans on familiar sides that nearly everyone likes rather than anything special, so it seems like a no-fail choice. I recommend it to people who like lunch boxes with lots of side dishes and to bulgogi fans. It also suits anyone who wants an easy meal without agonizing over the menu. However, the pork cutlet loses some crunch once heated, and the second half can get a little oily. The box gathers so many classic convenience store lunch box sides. That makes it an easy way to sample them all at once.
