In Korea, a convenience store lunch box is an everyday way to grab a cheap meal, and GS25 has a new one on shelves: the Today’s Hearty Lunch Box. Lately GS25 has been rolling out plenty of many-side boxes, both through its Lunch Box of the Month series and a revamp of its value-packed “Hyeja” menu. This one is a budget box built from dishes you often see in convenience store lunches, the kind that rarely divide opinion. I ordered it without expecting much. Yet it tasted surprisingly decent and filled me up nicely, so let’s see what’s inside.

Today’s Hearty Lunch Box: Price and Highlights
The box launched under the concept of “a meal you enjoy with a hearty portion and lineup.” The label also says it’s made with Korean-grown rice for better flavor. These days, though, nearly every box uses domestic rice, so I’m not sure that counts as a real selling point. By the way, my box had two price stickers stacked on top of each other. Peel the top one off gently and you’ll find a pretty low price: 4,300 won.
Beyond the food itself, one perk stood out most. GS25 has cut back sharply on the lunch boxes you can pre-order in its app at some point. Even so, this one could be reserved with little hassle.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe total weight is 435 g, and it comes in at 703 kcal. For the price, that’s a fairly large portion, and the calorie count means it should keep you full for a while. Keep in mind that boxes like this lean on processed foods, so their calories can run a bit higher than other lunch boxes. Sodium sits at 74% of the daily recommended intake, which suggests the seasoning was applied pretty generously.

Let’s take a quick look at the lineup. There are six sides in total, or seven if you count the ham laid on top of the rice. The main dish is most likely the pork bulgogi in the top-left compartment.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netAccording to the label, the pork bulgogi uses Korean pork hind leg. Given the price, it’s naturally cut a little thin, bulgogi-style. Still, it isn’t swimming in sauce, and they didn’t pad it out with vegetables either, which I’d call a small point in its favor. Ha.

The remaining sides are halved sausages with ketchup, two pieces of stir-fried fish cake, and a rolled omelet with a mystery sauce. Rounding things out are stir-fried jinmichae (seasoned dried squid) and kimchi. The kimchi doesn’t seem to have been stir-fried, and a thin slice of pressed ham sits on top of the rice.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netAs you can probably tell, most of the lineup is stir-fried, and the other dishes come with sauce too, so a lot of it tastes quite salty. That makes it a decent pick when your appetite is low. On the other hand, it could get tiresome on the palate fairly quickly.

Time to dig in. At this price, what matters is less the flavor itself and more how well it eats for the money. So I started with the pork bulgogi, the closest thing to a main dish here.

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netFirst off, the bulgogi has a slightly salty soy-based marinade, so I doubt it will split opinions much. Considering the price and the hind-leg cut, I expected paper-thin slices. Instead, it wasn’t sliced that thin, and it actually had some chew to it. Ha.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netIt pretty much tastes exactly the way it looks. There’s a bit of chew, and it goes well with rice, so this alone should keep the rice disappearing fast.

As I mentioned in the lineup section, this box runs a little salty overall, sides included. The sausage comes with ketchup by default. Meanwhile, the jinmichae is quite salty, so it’s hard to eat without rice.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe egg and fish cake were the least salty of the bunch, while the kimchi also leaned a little salty. Ha. Even among regular convenience store lunch fans, anyone who tires quickly of salty food might find this one a bit tough to finish.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netFinal Verdict: Budget Heartiness for 4,300 Won
Still, with pressed ham on the rice and real meat in the mix, the value is genuinely strong for 4,300 won. When you want a cheap meal in a hurry, you can grab this one without much thought and probably won’t regret it. For budget travelers in Korea, it’s the kind of box worth keeping in mind for a quick, low-cost lunch.

Q. Is this GS25 lunch box too salty?
