CU Tteoktwisun Bunsik Set Tteokbokki Review [Korean Food]

Home » K-food Review » K-Convenience Store Food » CU Tteoktwisun Bunsik Set Tteokbokki Review [Korean Food]

Today’s new CU lunch box is a bunsik (Korean snack-bar food) combo, Tteoktwisun Bunsik Set. “Tteoktwisun” is short for tteokbokki, twigim (fried snacks) and sundae (Korean blood sausage). This September, CU released two lunch boxes built around bunsik, including this set. Today I’m reviewing the first of them, the Tteoktwisun Bunsik Set, which comes with a generous serving of tteokbokki. Until now, if you wanted tteokbokki at a convenience store, there wasn’t much choice beyond instant, cup-noodle-style products. This one has a decent amount of tteokbokki, plus sundae and fried snacks, so it was surprisingly filling. Let’s take a look.

Tteoktwisun Bunsik Set: Price and Highlights

Even after the Pbick (PBICK) renewal, CU keeps releasing new items in its sub-lines, like the multi-side-dish Triple Jeongsik and Double Jeongsik sets and Level Up! Today’s item belongs to the Level Up line, built around generous portions, and it lets you enjoy tteokbokki, fried snacks and sundae as a convenience store lunch box. It costs 5,900 won. To heat it, microwave it for 1 minute in a 1000W microwave, stir everything well, then cook it for another 1 minute 30 seconds.

The box weighs 399 g in total, with 753 kcal and sodium at about 121% of the daily recommended value. Since it’s sold as a lunch box rather than an instant snack, the portion is quite generous. And because it’s bunsik, the calories and sodium are also a bit higher than a typical lunch box in a similar price range. Ha.

What’s in the Box

Let’s take a quick look at what’s inside. As the name says, it’s a lunch box made up of tteokbokki, fried snacks and sundae. On top of that, there’s one big yubu chobap. The tteokbokki has more rice cakes and fish cake than I expected, plus a simple green onion topping. The rice cakes are reportedly made from rice rather than wheat.

The Tteokbokki Sauce and the Set Broth

I think this sauce is why the instructions say to microwave it for 1 minute, stir, and then heat it for another 1 minute 30 seconds. Some of the seasoning is already mixed into the tteokbokki, but the part that gives it a slightly brothy feel seems to have been set with gelatin or fat. It’s a method you often see in convenience store lunch boxes with soup, right?

Gimmari, Casing-Free Sundae and Yubu Chobap

For the fried part, there are 2 mini gimmari, and the sundae is the casing-free “nude” style, with 6 pieces. A proper assortment of fried snacks or sundae with offal seems hard to pull off here, so it does feel a little like they were added just to round out the set. Ha. I guess I’ll settle for the yubu chobap they added so you don’t run out of food.

Taste Test: Spicier Than Expected

I heated it as instructed, so let’s dig in. Since it’s a tteokbokki lunch box, the rice cakes come first! I took a bite right away. Even though it’s a lunch box, the rice cakes weren’t dried out and had a nicely chewy texture, so they were easy to eat. The sauce, though, is spicier than I expected!

It tastes like the ready-made tteokbokki sauce you find in cup-style convenience store lunch boxes or at some gimbap shops. The base is a slightly sweet sauce, but the broth that had been set on top seems to add a lot of heat, because it was definitely much spicier than a typical ready-made sauce.

It’s a little sweet, but it’s the kind of flavor that keeps pulling you back. Ha. There was nothing in particular to dip the sundae in, so I dipped it in the broth, and it went quite well. The sundae itself isn’t seasoned, so eating it with the broth is just right. There’s also more broth than I expected, so you won’t run short.

Since it’s a convenience store lunch box, the gimmari got a little soft after heating, so I couldn’t expect much crunch, but soaked in the broth it was actually pretty tasty. And it turns out the yubu chobap wasn’t there in case the portion ran short; it was there for when things got too spicy. Ha.

How Spicy Is It?

Whenever it got too hot, I took a bite of yubu chobap and dipped the sundae and gimmari in the broth. Even so, for a spice lightweight like me, the heat was fairly strong! It was spicy enough that I didn’t really need pickled radish, but people who handle spice well might find the sweetness a little strong. If you’re someone who reaches for pickled radish even while eating Yeopgi Tteokbokki’s spicy level, you might want something on the side to cleanse your palate.

Final Verdict: A Spicy Bunsik Meal for 5,900 Won

It was spicy, but for a 5,900-won convenience store tteokbokki lunch box, I enjoyed it quite a bit! Of course, if there’s still a cheap bunsik shop near you, it may feel a bit pricey. But these days, ordering tteokbokki for delivery with a few extras easily goes past 20,000 won, so this was a nice option for a light (?) meal. Ha. If spice isn’t a problem for you, it’s worth trying once. For visitors to Korea, it’s also an easy way to try the classic bunsik trio of tteokbokki, fried snacks and sundae in a single convenience store box.
