Korean convenience stores keep expanding their lunchbox lineups, and today’s pick is CU’s new Assorted Ham & Chicken Bulgogi Double Set. It’s been a while since I reviewed CU’s PBICK double set line. As a double set with two main dishes, this one pairs assorted ham (made up of sausages and pressed ham) with chicken bulgogi as the mains. The remaining side dishes are decent too, making it a surprisingly solid stand-in for a full meal. So let’s take a closer look.

Assorted Ham & Chicken Bulgogi Double Set: Price and Highlights

CU’s double set lineup is filling out at a pretty quick pace. In the past the focus was on unusual concepts or renewing existing menus. Lately, though, the approach feels more like quickly combining proven, stable items and seeing what survives. This assorted ham and chicken bulgogi set gives off a similar vibe. The price is 5,900 won, a touch higher than the basic lunchbox lineup. That said, the previous double sets sat at almost the same price point, right?

The total weight is 356 g, with 704 kcal, and the sodium sits at about 68% of the daily recommended intake. At under 400 g it doesn’t look especially heavy, but since it’s packed with ham the calorie count comes in quite high. It should feel plenty filling for a single meal.

What’s in the Double Set

Let’s run through the components. Like the previous double sets, this one has five items total: two main dishes plus three sides. And just as before, one of the mains, the assorted ham, is loaded in a bit more heavily.

Main 1: The Assorted Ham

Since it’s an assorted ham lunchbox, it comes with a small packet of tomato ketchup that goes well with the ham. The ham itself can be a little salty, but the ketchup isn’t pre-applied, so you can dip to taste.

I thought the assorted ham was two slices of pressed ham cut in half for four pieces total, but looking closely at the middle there’s a slice of pink sausage mixed in, so it’s actually three. As for the Vienna sausages, they cut 2.5 in half for five pieces. There was once a trend of laying very thin slices of pressed ham over the rice. These pieces are a bit thicker than that.

Main 2: The Chicken Bulgogi

The other main, as the name suggests, is chicken bulgogi. The sauce looks like a standard gochujang-based bulgogi sauce used as-is. Like the other meat mains in the double sets, it has almost no vegetables and is built around the meat alone.

The Three Side Dishes

There are three sides in total: stir-fried kimchi, stir-fried fish cake, and spinach namul. Much like the other double sets, these are three fairly safe, crowd-pleasing sides chosen to avoid dividing opinions. Overall, the amount of banchan is quite generous.

Taste Test: How Does It Actually Taste?

Now let’s dig in. I heated the lunchbox in a 1000 W microwave for about 1 minute 40 seconds. After heating, the fat marbled through the pressed ham melted nicely, giving it a fairly rich, glossy look, ha. I squeezed the ketchup out to one side so I could dip when needed.

Starting with the Assorted Ham

First I tried a piece of the pressed ham. Whether it’s because they used a product with a high pork content, the basic flavor was pretty good. It’s also fairly savory on its own, so you probably won’t need to dip it in ketchup separately. It paired well with the rice.

The pink sausage tucked in disguised as pressed ham does have that distinctive flour-y taste, but it still has that “you’ll eat it if it’s there” charm, haha. This one is best dipped in ketchup. The Vienna sausages aren’t anything extraordinary either, but they’re savory too and go fine with rice.

The Chicken Bulgogi and the Sides

Next I tried the second main, the chicken bulgogi. It was mostly chicken with almost no vegetables, and the flavor was less spicy than expected, just moderately spicy. It felt quite basic, so it’s unlikely to divide opinions. There’s almost no sauce liquid, and it’s cooked in a slightly flame-grilled style.

The remaining sides were pretty unremarkable too. Overall the seasoning leans a little strong, so they came across as salty, but they went surprisingly well with rice. Rather than using them as a palate cleanser between the mains, it works better to pair them with the generous portion of rice.

Final Verdict

Alternating between the mains and the sides, the rice goes down easily, and it’s quietly filling, making it a lunchbox that’s good for satisfying your appetite, ha. There aren’t any sides likely to split opinions, so it was easy to eat through. The makeup itself is fairly simple, but with convenience store lunchboxes, sometimes what matters is that everything just goes down smoothly, and this one nails exactly that. It was a pretty satisfying single meal. If you’re visiting Korea, it’s an easy, reliable grab at any CU.
