Seven-Eleven Hando Chogwa Garlic Bulgogi [Korean Food]

The Seven-Eleven dosirak (Korean lunch box) in this review is the Hando Chogwa Garlic Bulgogi & Hamburg Steak Dosirak from the Hando Chogwa series (“Hando Chogwa” means “over the limit”). I reviewed the Hando Chogwa Bassak Bulgogi & Hamburg Steak Dosirak not long ago, and this one pairs the same Hamburg steak with a different main. Garlic bulgogi takes the place of bassak bulgogi, and gimmari gangjeong (fried seaweed rolls coated in a sweet gangjeong sauce) and stir-fried potato and sausage join the sides for a fresh side dish lineup. Let’s see what’s inside.

Hando Chogwa Garlic Bulgogi & Hamburg Steak: Price and Highlights

The Hando Chogwa series is Seven-Eleven’s flagship value lineup, with 20% or more extra rice and side dishes than an ordinary lunch box and a container that is 25% bigger. I remember finding the previous Bassak Bulgogi & Hamburg Steak version quite filling, so I was curious how the garlic bulgogi version would turn out and bought it right away. Ha. The price this time is 5,200 won.

The price is the same as the Bassak Bulgogi & Hamburg Steak Dosirak, and the total weight of 453 g is almost the same too. Calories come to 852 kcal, about 80 kcal more than the Bassak Bulgogi version (770 kcal), and sodium is 1,133 mg, around 57% of the daily recommended intake. The calorie count is on the hefty side, but given the amount of food, the sodium doesn’t seem all that high. To heat it, microwave it for 1 minute 50 seconds at 1,000 W.

What’s in the Box

Let’s check the contents. True to the Hando Chogwa series, the container is big to begin with. A wide compartment holds a generous serving of white rice, and the other compartments are divided between two main dishes and the side dishes.

The first main is the garlic bulgogi, a soy bulgogi with garlic added, just as the name says. The previous Bassak Bulgogi version had a fair amount of cabbage laid under the bulgogi, which was a little disappointing, so how this garlic bulgogi would turn out was my personal point of interest. The second main is the Hamburg steak, with the sauce already drizzled on top. It is almost the signature side of the Hando Chogwa Hamburg steak boxes. Both are said to use domestic pork, for what it’s worth.

For sides, the box includes gimmari gangjeong, stir-fried potato and sausage, and stir-fried kimchi. Gimmari gangjeong is a fried gimmari coated in a sweet gangjeong sauce. It is a side you rarely see in convenience store lunch boxes, so I was quietly glad to see it. Stir-fried potato and sausage and stir-fried kimchi are a textbook pairing for lunch box sides.

Overall, garlic bulgogi and Hamburg steak form a twin-main lineup, rounded out by gimmari gangjeong, stir-fried potato and sausage, and stir-fried kimchi. You could call it a hearty, meat-heavy Hando Chogwa-style Hamburg steak box.

Taste Test: Hamburg Steak, Garlic Bulgogi and Sides

Time to dig in. I started by cutting off a piece of the Hamburg steak, one of the box’s two main dishes, and eating it right away. It isn’t huge, but it is nicely thick, so there was a surprisingly satisfying chew.

A Dense, Hefty Hamburg Steak

Like last time, the Hamburg steak was dense and hefty, and even a single piece was quite filling. However, since the sauce comes poured over the top in advance, it may be a slight letdown for anyone who wants to dip it in plenty of extra Hamburg steak sauce.

The pasta that comes along is more of a filler, if anything. Ha. Overall, the thick, juicy Hamburg steak topped with a sweet teriyaki-style sauce was easy to eat and unlikely to split opinions much.

Garlic Bulgogi with a Gentle Garlic Aroma

Next, I tried the garlic bulgogi, the second star of this box. A sweet soy seasoning with a gentle garlic aroma made the savory depth feel stronger than in regular bulgogi.

The garlic aroma wasn’t as sharp as I expected, so it went very well with rice. There is quite a lot of sauce, so you can finish the rice without any left over. However, neither of the two mains comes in an overwhelming amount, so I was left wanting a little more as I ate.

Gimmari Gangjeong and the Other Sides

Thanks to its sweet gangjeong sauce, the gimmari gangjeong felt more like a snack than a side dish. It lost a little crunch after heating, which couldn’t be helped, but the chewy glass noodle texture made it fun to eat. The stir-fried potato and sausage and the stir-fried kimchi are familiar flavors, so they were good for changing up the taste now and then.

Past the halfway point, the bulgogi, Hamburg steak and gimmari gangjeong are all on the sweet side, so there were moments when it tasted a little too sweet. Alternating bites of stir-fried kimchi kept me from getting tired of it right to the end. True to the Hando Chogwa name, the portion was plenty to fill me up as a meal. Ha.

Final Verdict: Hearty Garlic Bulgogi and Hamburg Steak in the 5,000-Won Range

Personally, if you enjoyed the Bassak Bulgogi & Hamburg Steak Dosirak, I think you will be quite satisfied with this garlic bulgogi version too. It packs in garlic-scented bulgogi, a hefty Hamburg steak and gimmari gangjeong, so the meat and fried sides are well covered. However, the sides lean sweet and the box tops 850 kcal, so it may feel a little heavy for anyone who wants something light. I recommend it to people looking for a hearty meat lunch box, to Hamburg steak fans, and to anyone who wants a big-portion lunch box in the 5,000-won range. Since it puts a bulgogi main and a Hamburg steak main in one box, it is also an easy way to try both at once.

For the Hando Chogwa Bassak Bulgogi & Hamburg Steak Dosirak I reviewed earlier, which has the same Hamburg steak pairing, see the (Korean source) Bridge Economy report on the Hando Chogwa Bassak Bulgogi & Hamburg Steak Dosirak.
