Hello! Today I’m introducing CU’s new lunchbox menu, the Handon Gochujang Bulgogi Set. This release ties into Korea’s Liberation Day in August, an annual campaign CU runs together with the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to honor an independence activist and spread the word about their story. Beyond that angle, though, the portion is surprisingly generous and the side dishes are solid, so it works perfectly well as a full meal. Shall we take a closer look?

CU Gochujang Bulgogi Dosirak: Price and Highlights
This is one of the independence-themed lunchboxes CU rolls out every so often in August. It’s part of the “Taegukgi lunchbox” campaign, named after the Korean national flag, and proceeds from the menu go toward the memorial park project for the independence activist Yi Tae-jun. That gives you a good reason to buy it beyond the food itself. The price is 5,900 won.

Overall, the portion and calories don’t feel short for the price. One thing to note: you’re meant to remove the lid before heating it, so keep that in mind.

Now let’s check the composition. It’s a six-compartment lunchbox that packs in three kinds of jeon. Technically that makes it an eight-item box, but in practice it reads more like a six-side box. Still, the lineup is pretty full, and the balance between the vegetable sides and the meat sides is surprisingly good.

Even so, since this is a bit of a special-case box, the portions are packed in generously, so it should leave you genuinely full. The rice serving is quite large too, so you won’t run short. haha

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netTaste Test: How Does It Actually Eat?
Let’s dig in right away. I started with the main event, the gochujang pork bulgogi. Rather than the soupy, heavily sauced style, it was grilled with a slight char, giving thick, meaty cuts of pork leg with real bite.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netAs for the flavor, the standout point is how much more deeply the gochujang comes through compared with the usual off-the-shelf sauces. The meat is thick, so there’s a satisfying chew, and it pairs really well with rice. On its own it wasn’t all that spicy. That said, the cheongyang chili peppers bring a sneaky, tingling heat, so if a bite feels too mild, eating them together hits just right.

The seed jeotgal is fairly salty, though, so eaten plain it tastes quite intense. You’ll definitely want it with rice. The neobiani is a little on the greasy side, but since the meal is generally light, it never felt heavy. haha

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netAs mentioned earlier, the jeon come in three types, vegetable, chive, and kimchi, with half a piece of each. In this box the jeon aren’t heavily seasoned, which actually makes them pair nicely with the other side dishes.

Setting aside the fact that the sides run a little salty overall, this box tastes good across the board and the portion is generous, which makes it a surprisingly nice choice for a single meal. It leaves you full, and knowing the proceeds go to a good cause somehow makes it taste even better. haha When you need a solid, filling meal, this is one you won’t regret. If you’re visiting Korea, you can pick it up at any CU location while the Liberation Day campaign runs.
