Goobne Chicken, the Korean chain known for oven-roasted chicken, has a new collaboration with the Coupang Eats Eats Chef Collection: the Goobne Scallion Oil Tteokbokki Chicken. It was developed by chef Woo Jeong-wook, widely known as “Seoul Mom,” and reinterprets the Hanwoo gireum tteokbokki (oil-fried rice cakes with Korean beef) that is the signature dish at the restaurant Superpan as oven-roasted chicken. The base price is 24,000 won, and it’s on sale for a limited time through December 9. Coming from a Korean-food chef with 30 years of experience, it definitely felt different from the usual tteokbokki-and-chicken combos. Let’s take a look.

Scallion Oil Tteokbokki Chicken: Price and Highlights
I’ve already reviewed several Eats Chef Collection menus created by Coupang Eats and franchise brands. This time it’s Goobne’s turn, the chicken chain famous for oven roasting. Ha. As mentioned, this menu turns Superpan’s signature Hanwoo gireum tteokbokki into oven-roasted chicken, and it’s only on sale through December 9. Here are the prices.
- Seoul Mom Scallion Oil Tteokbokki Chicken: 24,000 won
- Seoul Mom Scallion Oil Tteokbokki Chicken, wings and drumettes: 27,000 won
It’s a bit pricey, right? That said, combining the first-order instant discount with coupons can bring it down by up to 5,000 won, so keep that in mind. Also, I assumed Eats Chef Collection menus could only be ordered on Coupang. However, depending on the franchise, you may be able to order through the brand’s own app or individual stores, so it’s worth checking.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netI went with the regular whole chicken. With 5,000 won in discounts, the 24,000-won base came to 25,000 won with delivery and 20,000 won in the end. There was naturally (?) no extra sauce and no cola, just the standard pickled radish.

Let’s check what’s inside. Even before opening the box, the spicy sauce smelled amazing. Actually, it smells less like tteokbokki and more like dakgalbi (spicy stir-fried chicken), with a slightly sweet yet spicy aroma. Maybe that’s because the sauce gets its fragrance from scallion oil?!

ⓒ
Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe chicken is roasted once in the oven, brushed with sauce, and then cooked again, which is probably why the glaze looks so rich. True to the gireum tteokbokki concept, roasted rice cakes are included too. The portion itself doesn’t look much different from Goobne’s regular original. The rice cakes are made from rice and have a hole in the middle, so they probably soak up the sauce nicely.

Surprisingly, the main ingredients of the sauce are chili flakes, garlic, sesame, and scallion oil. That’s said to make it thicker, with a deep flavor that suits Korean tastes. The cooking method is unusual in itself, and just reading the description, you can tell a lot of effort went into the sauce too. Ha.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netI can imagine the flavor in theory, but since I’ve never had Superpan’s tteokbokki, I was quite curious how it would actually taste. Overall, it’s a style of menu that didn’t exist before.

Let’s dig in. The original dish is gireum tteokbokki, but here the chicken is pre-roasted, brushed with sauce, and roasted again, so it has quite a shine. I grabbed a piece that caught my eye and took a bite.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netThe first bite was far from what we usually picture as tteokbokki. It was also quite unlike the sweet taste of store-bought tteokbokki sauce. There was a little sweetness, but it felt more like the sauce for nakji-bokkeum (spicy stir-fried octopus). That’s probably because it uses chili flakes rather than gochujang.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netNormally, when gochujang meets the starch of rice cakes in tteokbokki, you inevitably get a certain heavy, pasty feel (not that it’s a bad thing!). This sauce is quite clean instead, so it pairs really well with chicken. The balance between the lightly brined chicken and the sauce was quietly good, too. The juiciness of Goobne’s recently improved New Original was also still there.

Along the way, I tried the roasted rice cakes too, and they went quietly well with the sauce. Just note that they’re best eaten while still warm, or they turn hard. The sauce soaks into them nicely, so they’re great to eat alongside the leaner white meat.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netI also tried a juicy drumstick. Given the sauce, this menu seems to pair best with fattier cuts like drumsticks and wings. The whole bone-in chicken is good, but if you catch a discount, the wings-and-drumettes version is worth considering.

Copyright PAKOC https://pakoc.netHow Spicy Is It?
It had a fair amount of heat. Since the sauce is based on chili flakes and garlic, there’s a pungent kick. Still, it isn’t the numbing, lingering kind of heat you get from other spicy chicken. So even for me, someone who doesn’t handle spice well, it was perfectly manageable. It might be a little too spicy for young kids, though.

If you use the discounts well, this menu delivers both value and flavor. The only drawback is that it feels a little pricey at full price. Ha. Even so, the fresh take on the sauce and Goobne’s signature oven chicken make a great combination, so I’d strongly recommend giving it a try. It’s only on sale through December 9, so it’s worth ordering before then. For visitors to Korea, it’s also a creative way to taste two Korean favorites, chicken and tteokbokki, in one box.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How much is Goobne’s Scallion Oil Tteokbokki Chicken?
The whole chicken is 24,000 won, and the wings-and-drumettes version is 27,000 won. With a first-order discount and coupons, I saved 5,000 won and paid 20,000 won including delivery.
Q. Does it taste like tteokbokki?
Not really. It’s closer to a spicy stir-fried octopus sauce. Made with chili flakes instead of gochujang, it’s clean rather than heavy and pairs well with the juicy oven-roasted chicken, and the heat is pungent but doesn’t linger.
Q. How long is it available?
It’s a limited release through December 9. It belongs to Coupang Eats’ Eats Chef Collection, but some franchises also take orders through their own app or stores, so it’s worth checking.
